Hidden Lake began as a limestone quarry until it flooded and was abandoned. Although next to the Harpeth River, it lies tucked between two bluffs and was essentially hidden from view, giving it the name Hidden Lake. By 1928 it had become the site of a popular resort known for high quality swimming water, a water slide, and a music venue where many popular bands of the Big Band era played. It was later abandoned again and left to memory as nature reclaimed it. Today the lake and its surroundings are protected as part of Harpeth River State Park, preserving its unique ecosystems, the remnants of cultural history, and a striking example of nature adapting to the scars of industry for future generations.
