Pond Island Light stands on Pond Island at the mouth of Maine’s Kennebec River, where it marks the approach from sea to river. First established in 1821, it formed part of the early federal effort to improve maritime safety along the New England coast. The present structure dates to 1855 and replaced an earlier station while continuing the same navigational function. Its importance rests in that long, unbroken role guiding vessels at the entrance to one of Maine’s significant rivers.
