Popham Beach State Park is a 605-acre public recreation area on Maine’s Atlantic coast in Phippsburg, occupying a broad, shifting shoreline between the Morse River and the Kennebec River. Its significance lies in the constantly changing coastal landscape, where erosion, storms, river movement, and breaches of the tombolo repeatedly reshape the beach, dunes, and even forested ground. As one of Maine’s busiest day-use destinations, it is both a popular place for swimming, kayaking, fishing, picnicking, and hiking and an important example of an active coastal system. Nearby Fort Popham, Fort Baldwin, and the Popham Colony remains connect the park to military and colonial history.
