Quail Mountain
Nature
Quail Mountain, the highest point in Joshua Tree National Park at 5,816 feet, rises in the Little San Bernardino Mountains where desert and mountain landscapes meet. Near the southern end of the Transverse Ranges, it overlooks the Colorado Desert and Coachella Valley, with the Peninsular Ranges beyond. Reaching the broad, flat summit usually requires a long approach from Keys View Road, including cross-country travel and little shade, as no maintained trail leads to the top. Wildfires, especially the 1999 Juniper Complex Fire, destroyed much of its old-growth woodland, though some pinyon pines and California junipers survived. In 1999, two civilian T-28 aircraft crashed into its west side, killing both pilots.
