At Evansville Regional Airport in Indiana, the Evansville Wartime Museum interprets wartime history through galleries on World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as flight simulators and military equipment. It grew from a local campaign to honor Evansville’s World War II role in building P-47 Thunderbolts at a Republic Aviation factory. Begun in 1986 by former plant supervisor Frank Whetsel, the effort endured fundraising struggles, a 1997 fire, and decades of work by his family and the P-47 Foundation. Opened in 2017, the museum later acquired and repainted a P-47 to represent Indiana’s first such aircraft.
