These Iroquoian-speaking Native Americans established their towns along branches of the Susquehanna River that facilitated travel, trade, fish, and water. The Susquehannock lived in fortified cities composed of sixty- to eighty-foot-long houses. Their society was a confederacy made up of as many as twenty tribes. They were typically farmers and traders and remained independent until the 1600s.
