Salt Springs State Park in northeastern Pennsylvania preserves Fall Brook, Silver Creek, a deep wooded gorge, old eastern hemlocks, and three waterfalls, with the Fall Brook Natural Area recognized by the Old-Growth Forest Network. The salt springs that gave the place its name were used by Native Americans and later by settlers, but never supported a profitable salt industry. Though surrounding forests were heavily cut, many ancient trees near Fall Brook Gorge survived as the area became a recreation destination. After unsuccessful oil drilling in 1902, the land remained with the Wheaton family until Pennsylvania acquired it in 1973. Since 1995, a local non-profit has managed the park, which now unites conservation, historic farm buildings, and trails.
