Constructed in 1922 by the Miami Conservancy District, the Adams Street Bridge was a seven-span reinforced concrete filled arch structure totaling 477 feet in length. It incorporated piers from an earlier four-span concrete arch bridge built in 1913 and was extended to span a wider area between new flood levees developed to handle high water after the devastating 1913 flood. The project was regarded as a model of engineering and economic efficiency because its methods of reinforcing and reusing the existing piers were unprecedented, and the 1913 arches served as temporary falsework for the new arches while leaving the Miami River unobstructed. Through the ingenuity of J.H. Kimball and H.G. Peterson under the direction of A.F. Griffin and superintendent W. D. Rogers at the Miami Conservancy District, building the new bridge on top of the old one reduced the amount of concrete and timber needed, avoided the danger of floods washing out timber falsework, and used the existing right-of-way. The bridge also featured solid railings considered crash-resistant for their time and served for many generations as a focal point during Troy's annual Strawberry Festival.
