The first section of bike trail in the Miami Valley was built here, beginning a regional trail network that later grew to more than 375 miles. To create the first mile, the City of Troy worked with The Miami Conservancy District and The Troy Foundation to place the trail on top of levees along the Great Miami River. Built eight feet wide and almost three-quarters of a mile long, it ran along the top of the Morgan Ditch levee, crossed Harrison Street and Elm Street, and continued along the south side of the Great Miami River levee to the Adams Street Bridge. Completed in 1973, the first paved trail was already seeing steady use before its completion was announced. Funding included $9,725 from The Troy Foundation and $1,562 from the City of Troy's Beautification Committee. The Great Miami River Recreation Trail now extends 103 miles along nearly the entire river route, near museums, historic downtowns, picnic facilities, natural parkland, and gently rolling terrain, and connects with Wolf Creek Trail, Mad River Trail, Stillwater Trail, Ohio-to-Indiana Trail, and the Dayton-Kettering Connector. Designated a National Recreation Trail, it is part of more than 375 miles of paved, multi-use trails across southwest Ohio that reach 40 communities in 11 counties, linking cities, schools, parks, historic landmarks, and attractions while supporting transportation, recreation, wellness, and quality of life.
