Sandia Peak Tramway rises from Albuquerque’s foothills to Sandia Peak and remains one of New Mexico’s best-known mountain landmarks. The longest aerial tram in the Americas, it was also the world’s longest for decades after opening in 1966. Built by Bell Engineering for the Sandia Peak Ski Company, the project required thousands of helicopter trips and features a 7,720-foot upper clear span, among the world’s longest. The double reversible tram carries passengers between dramatic elevation changes in about 15 minutes, linking the summit to sweeping views, trails, skiing, and biking. Its route also passes over TWA Canyon, site of the 1955 crash of TWA Flight 260.
