Early Shekelamy/Schuykill Indian paths led to this spring. In 1762, two of these paths were followed to construct the first road between Lancaster and Reading. In 1823 John and Nicolas Coleman opened a stage line stopping here to allow passengers to fill a vessel. During on-site drilling in 1972, it was discovered that this water is passing through a natural sand pocket before surfacing. Construction of a well spring connecting directly to this sand pocket took place in 1976. Today this facility is recognized as a unique natural resource.
