In The Dalles, Oregon, this center serves as the official interpretive center for the Columbia River Gorge, presenting the region as both a natural landscape and a route of human history. On 54 acres, it explores the gorge’s geology, Ice Age prehistory, Native American culture and basketry, exploration tied to Lewis and Clark, travel on the Oregon Trail, settlement, transportation, and natural history. Opened in 1997, it also includes the Wasco County Historical Museum, devoted to the history of Wasco County’s people. Its library, live raptor programs, and paved interpretive trail connect indoor exhibits with broad views of the gorge and Klickitat Hills.
