A section of road below dates to the colonial period. Although it appears to be a ditch, that form resulted from continuous wagon traffic and road maintenance. In colonial Florida, sandy roads often became deeply rutted and difficult for wagons to cross, and loose sand was periodically thrown to the sides, creating the banks that remain visible. This road may have preceded the 1770s Kings Road that crossed over Hewitt Sawmill dam. It was also likely used after the Patriot War, circa 1813, and historians have suggested that this section became the replacement connection to Kings Road after the sawmill was destroyed and the mill dam was breached during the Patriot War. It leads to a ford at Hulett's Branch, then east back to Kings Road.
