Smith Mansion, also called the Smith Family Cabin, is a roughly seventy-five-foot multistory log house overlooking Wyoming’s Wapiti Valley near the route to Yellowstone. Francis Lee Smith, a Cody native and architecture graduate, began building it in 1971 from timber left after a 1952 wildfire, intending it as a tribute to the North Fork Mountains. What began as a family home grew into an irregular tower as Smith kept adding levels and extensions while his family lived there in harsh conditions. After Smith died in a 1992 fall while working on the structure, his daughter helped preserve it, and it later passed to new ownership. It remains a distinctive valley landmark.
