Wapiti Ranger Station in Wyoming’s Shoshone National Forest is regarded as the oldest United States Forest Service ranger station in the country and has been in continuous use since its construction in 1903. Built by W. H. Pierce as Shoshone National Forest expanded and divided for administration, it was also the first Forest Service ranger station constructed with federal funding. The original single-story log building, made from native timber, remains part of an active forest management complex despite later additions and interior updates. Its exceptional longevity and early importance in the history of the national forests led to designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1963 and listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
