In 1949, volunteers of the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department built a fire station on this site using donated and salvaged materials on land donated by the Vaszauskas family. The original apparatus included a 1941 Ford LaFrance, a 1947 International tanker, and a 1928 Hahn City service ladder truck. Before the station was built, the Ford was kept in a gas station across the street and the tanker in a barn at Judd's corner. Today, a memorial garden has been developed on this site.
