Luna Peak, in Washington’s North Cascades National Park, is the highest summit in the Picket Range and is known for its remote setting, steep local relief, and rugged character. Rising more than 6,560 feet above McMillan Creek in just 1.8 miles, it has an especially dramatic presence within one of the wildest parts of the range. Bill Cox and Will F. Thompson first climbed it in early September 1938. The usual route is difficult, requiring off-trail travel, bushwhacking, careful route-finding, and exposed scrambling near the summit. Climbed only rarely, Luna Peak is valued less for technical alpine objectives than for its remoteness and solitude.
