New Dungeness Light, a working lighthouse on Dungeness Spit near Sequim, has operated continuously since 1857, making it one of the earliest lights established in Washington Territory. Its original duplex-and-tower design was damaged over time by earthquakes and erosion, and in 1927 the tower was cut from 100 feet to 63 feet, requiring a new lantern room and lens from Admiralty Head. The station later received several modern beacons. It also preserved a long keeper tradition, remaining one of the few United States lighthouses with a full-time keeper until 1994, when volunteers took over year-round staffing and public tours. The 8-acre station district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
