Wyoming was a six-masted wooden schooner completed in 1909 at Bath, Maine, for the coastal coal trade and is widely regarded as the largest wooden ship ever built. Designed by Bant Hanson and built by Miles M. Merry, she carried up to 6,000 tons of coal and used auxiliary machinery to work with a small crew. Her great size made her profitable and impressive, but also revealed the structural limits of wooden shipbuilding, as her hull flexed badly in heavy seas. In March 1924, while carrying coal from Norfolk toward Saint John, she was lost in a nor'easter off Massachusetts with all 14 aboard.
