In June of 1872, Saline County obtained ownership of the northeast quarter of Section 25 to be used as a county farm and asylum for the poor, except for a one-acre tract set aside as a cemetery, now known as the Saline County Cemetery. The first burial took place in 1873 and the last in 1927, and the cemetery was officially closed in 1948. Records indicate that 62 people were buried there, but when the site was restored in 1988, there was no evidence that monuments had ever been erected. Markers now show the locations of graves, though the individual graves cannot be identified, and a common marker is located in the center of the cemetery. No records were found showing that the cemetery had ever been formally dedicated or blessed, but on May 28, 1990, Father Kerry Ninemier, representing the Salina Ministerial Association, conducted a blessing during a formal dedication ceremony. Although the land was traditionally called the poor farm, that term was a misnomer because Saline County then had no hospital, retirement home, nursing home, or residential center for the indigent, and the County Poor Farm served all of those purposes. Not all of the people buried in the cemetery were residents of the County Farm.
