In 1965, Leland and LaRita Boren made Upland, Indiana, their home when they brought The Pierce Governor Company, Inc. to town after labor disputes in Anderson, Indiana, and the initiative and generosity of Upland residents encouraged the move. For more than 50 years, they positively impacted the town by bringing manufacturing jobs, contributing generously to local causes and needs, and supporting projects and programs that served children and families. LaRita started The Greenhouse Day Care Center, founded the Chanticleer restaurant, helped develop Upland’s softball and baseball diamonds, and began a pre-school program known as Kiddie Kampus that still exists today. Through The Boren Foundation, Inc., Leland and LaRita assisted Upland schools and organizations as well as others throughout Grant County, and by focusing on education, children, and the arts they enriched the lives of countless people in the area. Their farm with its pink barns became a landmark in the Upland area, and although the barn color was meant to reflect the color of the soil in LaRita’s home state of Oklahoma, Upland became their home.
