Three Kids Mine in Henderson, Nevada, was an open-pit manganese mine that operated from 1917 to 1961, rising and falling with wartime demand during World War I and World War II. Founded after B.R. Jefferson, B. Edwards, and J. Marrs discovered a rich deposit, it expanded with a mill built in 1942, briefly closed, then resumed larger-scale production before the pits were exhausted. After closure, the abandoned site became known for graffiti art, including the Wheel of Misfortune mural. In recent decades, attention has turned to contamination, federal reclamation legislation, and redevelopment of the former mine into housing and parkland.
