The Germantown Covered Bridge, an inverted bow string truss covered bridge erected in 1870, spanned Little Twin Creek on the Dayton Pike in Germantown, Ohio, for 41 years before being moved in 1911 to East Center Street, where it spans the creek at its present location. Restored in 1963, when it was 93 years old, it was reputed to be the only existing covered bridge of its kind in the world. After the bridge became dangerous and was closed to traffic in 1963, the people of Germantown chose to preserve it as a landmark. Mayor Ross Brewer officially appointed a committee of twelve civic leaders, Miami Valley business firms offered their services, and the work was completed without assistance from the village budget. Restored and beautified as a link with Ohio's early history, the bridge stands as a symbol of individual initiative in America's pioneer days and of respect for American heritage and tradition.
