Pittsfield's first fire district was created by the legislature in 1870. At first, its equipment was housed in a building on Water Street. Engine Hall was built in 1878 with space for the famous Babcock Fire Extinguisher on the first floor and a meeting hall on the second. After hand pumpers fell into disuse, the station housed the latest motorized vehicles and continued serving the community until 1974.
