Green Island Light on Green Bay in Wisconsin was established in the early 1860s after George Gordon Meade determined that a lighthouse on Green Island would serve navigation there and along the nearby shore. The station’s first keeper, Samuel Drew, and his wife Mary managed it for two decades while farming the island, enduring isolation, fire, and the dangers of regional disaster. Their family remained closely tied to the station into the 20th century, with Frank and George Drew later serving as keepers and earning a reputation for numerous rescues. Automated in 1933 and replaced by a steel tower in 1956, the site still reflects Green Bay’s maritime history.
