The Town of Wheatfield honors men from the town who died in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. In June 2018, a small group of veterans began preserving the 1965 Huey helicopter in front of the Town of Wheatfield garage after years of exposure to the elements had damaged it. Manufactured by Bell Aircraft of Wheatfield, New York, the Huey became an icon of military history through its use during the Vietnam War and still flies today in police and fire service around the world. In April 2019, a larger group of veterans joined together to create a memorial honoring past and present men and women who served, with plans to move the restored Huey helicopter and a tank from their former location to a more prominent site. On August 7, 2021, after many hours and days of dedication, the Wheatfield Veterans Memorial Committee presented the memorial to the residents of Niagara County and service personnel everywhere as a humble expression of gratitude to those who have answered the nation's call, made possible by support from citizens, private corporations, the Niagara County Legislature, and the Supervisor and Town Board of Wheatfield.
