Whitewater Falls consists of two major waterfalls on the Whitewater River along the North Carolina–South Carolina border. Over a 3.5-mile stretch, the river drops about 1,500 feet as it passes between the two states, creating Upper Whitewater Falls in North Carolina’s Nantahala National Forest and Lower Whitewater Falls in South Carolina’s Sumter National Forest. Upper Whitewater Falls has a 411-foot plunge and is identified by the U.S. Forest Service as the highest waterfall east of the Rockies, while Lower Whitewater Falls drops 200 feet downstream. Together they form a notable series of falls and cascades linked across a state line.
