Sassafras Mountain, in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the South Carolina–North Carolina line, is the highest point in South Carolina and is unusually accessible, with a short wheelchair-accessible walk from the parking area to the summit. An observation tower opened there in 2019. The mountain also preserves traces of earlier travel and settlement patterns: remnants of the old Sassafras Gap Road, once the preferred route to Rosman and Brevard in the late 19th century, remain near the summit, along with Hickory Head Spring, the headwater of the South Saluda River. Conservation transfers in 2010 helped protect thousands of acres around the mountain, now part of Headwaters State Forest.
