Henry C. Burn (1839-1912), a state representative and Darlington County public servant, lived here from 1882 until his death. Born in Chesterfield District, he was educated at St. David’s Academy in Society Hill and then at Furman University before joining the Confederate army. After returning to South Carolina, he farmed briefly in Chesterfield District but was back in Society Hill by 1875. He represented Darlington District in the South Carolina House from 1890 to 1892, later served as postmaster of Society Hill from 1893 to 1900, was a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention of 1895, and was Darlington County Superintendent of Education from 1900 to 1908. The house was built as a four-room cottage and was later enlarged by his son Frank. Burn also operated a carpenter’s shop and a blacksmith shop on the property.
