Cold River Virgin Forest is a protected old-growth forest in northwestern Massachusetts within Mohawk Trail State Forest, about nine miles southeast of North Adams. Spanning roughly 348 acres, it is a virgin hemlock-northern hardwood forest regarded as the only stand of its type in New England. Its eastern hemlocks and sugar maples include trees more than 400 years old, preserving a rare view of the region's woodland before settlement. In April 1980, the National Park Service designated it a National Natural Landmark, recognizing one of Massachusetts's most important surviving old-growth forests.
