Monroe State Forest in northwestern Massachusetts spans the towns of Monroe and Florida, with a small section reaching the Vermont border. Established in 1924 and managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, it preserves steep mountain terrain, deep valleys, and broad views. Its woods still hold traces of an earlier farming landscape in 19th-century cellar holes and stone walls. In the 1930s, Civilian Conservation Corps workers created notable features including Raycroft Lookout above the Deerfield River. The forest also contains 273 acres of old-growth forest and supports hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, fishing, and restricted hunting in a relatively wild setting.
