Mohawk Trail State Forest is a protected landscape of more than 7,700 acres in northwestern Massachusetts, spanning Charlemont, Hawley, and Savoy. Created in 1921 to preserve scenic and historic values associated with the old Mohawk Trail, it includes rugged ridges, ravines, river valleys, and diverse wildlife. The forest gained additional facilities through Civilian Conservation Corps work in the 1930s and is especially significant for its extraordinary trees, including extensive pre-settlement forest, many specimens centuries old, and some of the tallest white pines in Massachusetts and New England. Today it remains both a major conservation area and a popular place for outdoor recreation.
