Smoke Hole Caverns is a show cave in Grant County, West Virginia, near Smoke Hole Canyon and west of Petersburg, opened to the public on May 30, 1940. Local lore links it to Prohibition-era moonshining, as its single entrance and steady fresh water would have made it a secluded, practical site for illicit whiskey production. The cave is known for a feature described as the world’s largest ribbon stalactite, unusual helictites, a crystal cave coral pool reportedly matched in only one other cavern, and one of the highest cave ceilings in the eastern United States. Tourism modifications have also significantly damaged some formations.
