Bear Rocks Preserve
Nature
Bear Rocks Preserve is a four hundred seventy-seven-acre reserve on the Allegheny Front in West Virginia, known for its open heathland, white sandstone outcrops, and sweeping views from the rim toward Virginia and the South Branch Potomac. Set on the Eastern Continental Divide, it marks the split between waters flowing east to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic and west toward the Gulf of Mexico. Its harsh, windy, wet upland climate has created a rare alpine-looking landscape of stunted red spruce, heath barrens, bogs, and balds that shelter rare species and northern wildlife unusual for the state. Noted in seventeen forty-six, the preserve survives as protected land despite heavy alteration nearby by logging and fire.
