Built in 1894 by A. J. Birchfield, first editor of Alvin "Sun," the Birchfield-McCown House is a 12-room Victorian structure that often served as a storm refuge and kept more than 100 people safe during the famed 1900 coastal hurricane. Leading townspeople, including the Greer, Carleton, Finger, and McCown families, have owned the house.
