Since 1891, The New York Botanical Garden has evolved into an iconic botanical garden and urban oasis comprising more than 50 gardens and collections. Its 250-acre landscape, centered on a 50-acre old-growth forest, is enhanced by formal gardens, plant collections, and modern and historic buildings. In 1967, the Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark, helping preserve its picturesque gardens and vistas for future generations. The Lillian and Amy Goldman Stone Mill has also received that designation and has been named a New York City Landmark. Other structures on the grounds with this distinction include the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, LuEsther T. Mertz Library, Lillian Goldman Fountain of Life, and Tulip Tree Allée.
