Fort Gilmer, built in 1838, was one of seven forts erected in Cherokee territory to garrison U.S. troops ordered to enforce the removal of the last Cherokee Indians from this region under the terms of the New Echota treaty of 1833. It served as the temporary headquarters of Gen. Winfield Scott, under whose command the removal was carried out. The reluctant Indians were brought there and guarded until the westward march began.
