Basin Mountain is a prominent Sierra Nevada peak near Bishop in eastern California. Though lower than nearby Mount Tom and Mount Humphreys, it stands out in the westward view from Bishop above the Buttermilks and is one of the range’s most noticeable front-country landmarks. Its significance lies less in a dramatic summit than in its position and sweeping outlook. A relatively easy scramble leads to broad views of Mount Tom, Bishop, and the Owens Valley, with especially striking night scenes as valley lights contrast with the dark eastern Sierra. It is also among California’s thirteener peaks.
