Mount Humphreys
Nature
Mount Humphreys, in California’s Sierra Nevada on the Fresno-Inyo county line, is the thirteenth highest mountain in the state, the highest California peak below fourteen thousand feet, and the highest summit in the Bishop area. Named in 1873 by the California Geological Survey for Andrew A. Humphreys, then chief engineer of the United States Army, it stands among the Sierra’s major high summits. Its significance rests not only on its elevation but also on its strong visual prominence in the eastern Sierra landscape.
