The 1872 organization of the Ladies Library Association led to the creation of this building after the Farwell Land Company gave the Association the lot in 1879 and many people donated materials and labor. The library was dedicated debt free in 1883 at a total cost of $420.39. Over the years, the building was used by the Grand Army of the Republic Post #386 and its auxiliary, the Woman's Relief Corps, to keep alive the memory of those who fought in the Civil War, by Methodist and Congregational churches for 10 cent dinners, during WWI by the Red Cross, and later by the Rebekah Lodge and the Farwell Women's Club. After fire damage in the 1930's, the public again responded with labor and donations. In 1931 Surrey Township rented the building for its library until the present library opened in 1977, after which the building was given to the Farwell Area Historical Museum. An addition was added in 2001.
