Jean Baptiste Point duSable was a Haitian Negro fur trader and the first permanent settler of Chicago. He died on 28 Aug 1818 in St. Charles, Missouri, and was buried in the original St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery. According to tradition, his remains were moved to the second Borromeo churchyard and finally to the present cemetery.
