Mount Maxwell Provincial Park protects a prominent mountain landscape on western Salt Spring Island, overlooking Burgoyne Bay and the Sansum Narrows. Established in 1938 for the sweeping views from Baynes Peak, it covers 231 hectares and rises to about 580 metres above sea level, with vistas across Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and British Columbia’s mainland coast. The park also forms part of a larger continuous protected area with adjacent reserves and parks totaling more than 1,100 hectares. Its naming preserves layers of history: George Henry Richards called it Mount Baynes around 1859, local residents favored Mount Maxwell, adopted officially in 1911, and the Hul'qumi'num name Hwmet'utsun is also recognized.
