The Veterans' War Memorial in Perth Amboy honors the men and women from the city who served the United States in conflicts since World War I, including those who died or remain missing in action. Erected in 2005, it bears the names of more than 8,500 veterans and features an American bald eagle at the center, with engraved stones forming open wings facing Raritan Bay as a symbol of strength, freedom, remembrance, and watchfulness over those serving overseas. The soldiers depicted are abstract figures meant to represent all time periods and all walks of life, making the memorial a timeless expression of Perth Amboy's service. Its Wall of Honor includes Sergeant Joseph J. Sadowski of the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, who at Valhey, France, on September 14, 1944, ordered his crew to dismount from a disabled, burning tank, then returned under intense enemy fire to try to rescue a trapped crewman and was killed by enemy machine-gun fire; he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Edmund Hmieleski, Jr., a Perth Amboy native who served in the U.S. Army with the 320th Service Group and 864th Bomb Squadron and later led the Jr. R.O.T.C. for many years, and Joseph F. Deegan, a Perth Amboy native who served in U.S. Navy Motor Torpedo Squadrons 25 and 40 and later became a Middlesex County judge in 1969 before joining the New Jersey Superior Court, were instrumental in establishing the memorial along with V.F.W. Post #663 and other contributors and volunteers.
