Buffalo Mountain

Buffalo Mountain, rising to 3,972 feet, has long been an old and familiar landmark to local residents, who told their children they could go anywhere in a day as long as they could see “the buffalo.” Its great hump towers a thousand feet above the surrounding terrain, while other rock formations suggest a lowered head and vertical slabs form the neck. Visible at numerous intervals for 30 miles south along the parkway, the privately owned mountain was mined for lead for more than 50 years.
