Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, is a nonprofit, AZA-accredited wildlife park and one of the state’s leading attractions. Opened in 1971 to replace a smaller zoo, it grew from a public-private effort into one of the largest zoos in the United States, housing more than 3,000 animals of nearly 400 species across 247 acres. Its long expansion added major habitats such as African Veldt, Tropics, and Downing Gorilla Forest, while newer exhibits include elephant, big cat, and penguin areas. The zoo is especially important for conservation, breeding rare and endangered animals, and notable successes such as Komodo dragon parthenogenesis and Mexican wolf recovery work.
