Old Cowtown Museum in Wichita, Kansas, preserves and interprets the city’s transformation in the late 19th century from frontier settlement to cattle-shipping center and then to an agricultural and manufacturing community. Situated beside the Arkansas River on 23 acres along the original Chisholm Trail route, it includes 54 historic and re-created buildings, a period farm, livestock, and more than 12,000 artifacts. Its setting connects directly to Wichita’s rise after settlement by the Wichita tribe in 1864, the arrival of Jesse Chisholm’s trading post in the 1860s, incorporation in 1870, and rail-linked cattle drives in 1872 that gave the city its enduring “Cowtown” identity.
