The Grand Village of the Kickapoo in rural Illinois preserves the site of a former Kickapoo settlement associated with the Warren Bane Site, a defensive fort built around 1750 to protect the village. The community remained occupied until 1813, when a U.S. Army officer under Zachary Taylor burned it. Recognized for its archaeological importance, the Warren Bane Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Its exact location has been restricted to help protect it from vandalism and looting.
