At 5:00 p.m. on August 30, 1862, the 73rd Ohio Infantry of the 2nd Brigade under McLean, First Division under Schenk, First Corps under Sigel, Army of Virginia, U.S.A., was engaged in fierce combat under Col. Orland Smith. As Samuel B. Hurst, regimental historian, recounted, the enemy in front moved in concert with forces on the flank, emerged from the woods, and masked and overlapped the regiment's line. The whole left of the brigade poured a murderous volley into them, and the fighting quickly grew fierce, but the contest was brief as the flanking column pressed on until the enemy had nearly gained the rear and opened fire on the flank, forcing a retreat.
