At 5:30 p.m. on August 30, 1862, the Third Brigade of Ricketts's Second Division, Third Corps, Army of Virginia, U.S.A., under Col. John W. Stiles, included the 12th Massachusetts, 83rd New York, 13th Massachusetts, and 11th Pennsylvania. Pvt. George D. Paine of the 13th Massachusetts recalled the brigade's losses in stark terms, saying men "dropped like tenpins before an expert player" as a sergeant of Company F was shot through the head, Franks was shot through the face, Stevens was shot through the thigh, and another man fell in front of him, struck repeatedly before turning over and dying.
