Thunder River Trail is a historic route on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park that reaches one of the canyon’s more remote areas. Its upper sections were first built in 1876, when rumors of placer gold drew speculators seeking access. Work resumed in 1925 under the U.S. Forest Service and continued after the National Park Service assumed control, with the final sections to Tapeats Creek finished in 1939. For a time the route was open to motorized vehicles, but safety concerns led to its closure to such traffic on July 1, 1962. It remains a hiking trail within the North Rim’s historic trail system.
